Funding available for Waiheke projects

11 September 2025
Waiheke-based community groups working on Waiheke’s marine environment or maritime education are being invited to apply for a share of $20,000 in grants from Waiheke Marina’s Maritime Trust.

“Last year we were introduced to some fantastic projects and the passionate people behind them,” says marina co-director Mark Schmack. “This funding is about helping those ideas succeed – whether it’s protecting the marine environment, teaching water safety, or building skills that benefit the community.”

“We are looking forward to seeing applications from new groups and projects apply.”

In 2024 the Trust supported five local initiatives, including a trailer fit-out for Waiheke Surf School, Bluetooth headsets for Waiheke Coastguard, a term of swimming lessons for Te Huruhi Primary School pupils, a sailing pontoon for Waiheke High School, and an opportunity for youth to learn traditional sailing skills on a 120-year-old vessel.

Three Waiheke locals — Todd Parkin, Linda Simpson and sailor Serena Woodhall — were appointed as administrators of the Trust last year.

Applications close on 30 October 2025, with successful applicants to be notified by 20 November.
