Our Environment

Our marine environment is precious, and we take our duty to protect it seriously

Waiheke Marina has been designed to put the health of the marine environment first, and will be operated on the same principle. The Marina has been constructed without dredging or reclamation, and its floating attenuators, which do not disrupt currents in the bay, are the first of their kind at this scale in New Zealand.

In addition, we have developed detailed policies and management plans around anti-foul paints, biosecurity, and water quality, and take special care of the resident population of Korora located in the bay.

Marina design

Waiheke Marina was designed to have the minimum impact possible on the existing coastal environment. Its floating wave attenuators protect the bay and berthed vessels without creating permanent changes to coastal currents or modifying the seabed. Anti-fouling policy

Waiheke Marina is the first New Zealand marina to regulate anti-fouling coatings on vessels berthing in the marina so that they are low-impact, to reduce the effects of these substances on marine water quality. Check out our Anti-Foul Policy here.

Biosecurity

Waiheke Marina has a comprehensive biosecurity policy aimed at managing marine and terrestrial pests. Find a copy of our policy here.

We have also implemented specialised “Clean Hull” requirements for all visiting and berthing vessels to help reduce the spread of the invasive marine pest Caulerpa. Our Clean Hull requirements can be found here.

Protecting kororā

We have kept a watchful eye on the local population of Kororā from the time we started building the marina to make sure our construction work didn’t harm them or discourage them from their homes. We are pleased to say that we were successful and there appears to be more Kororā activity in the breakwater then before we began. If you would like to review our latest construction monitoring reports, you will find them here.

Now that we are open, ongoing pest control and monitoring of Kororā will continue in accordance with our Kororā Predator Control and Monitoring Plan.
