At Waiheke Marina we are working towards becoming a certified Clean Marina.

This means that we have taken the Clean Marina pledge and that we are preparing for an extensive auditing process that will ultimately see us sit alongside New Zealand’s most environmentally conscious operations.

The New Zealand Clean Marinas program requires operations to meet strict levels of environmental compliance, reflecting the industry’s commitment to sustainable environmental performance, particularly concerning water quality.

By design, Waiheke Marina puts the health of the marine environment first. The Marina has been constructed without dredging or reclamation, and its floating attenuators, which do not disrupt currents in the bay, are the first of their kind at this scale in New Zealand.

In addition, we have developed detailed policies and management plans around anti-foul paints, biosecurity, and water quality, and take special care of the resident population of Korora located in the bay.

Clean Marinas in New Zealand include ten that fly the Clean Marina flag at Level 3 status, the highest possible level: Half Moon Bay Marina, Gulf Harbour Marina, Westhaven Marina, Whitianga Marina, Whangamata Marina, Tauranga Bridge Marina, Seaview Marina, Te Ana Marina in Lyttelton, Nelson Marina, and Bay of Islands Marina.

To receive Clean Marina certification, marinas are audited by the New Zealand Marina Operators Association on factors such as the provision and promotion of recycling facilities, no-discharge policies and enforcement of these policies, provisions for boat owners to facilitate regular hull cleaning, the use of sustainable materials in the maintenance and building of infrastructure, and the reuse of dredged materials. A focus on marina policies and procedures rounds out the criteria for becoming a certified Clean Marina.
